Obituary of James Savery King

KING, James Savery, 78 of Tampa passed away July 11, 2007. Born in Cleveland, OH in 1929, the family quickly moved to Tampa where he attended Roosevelt Elementary, Wilson Junior High, St Petersburg High School and graduated from H. B. Plant High School in 1948, where he was a State and AAU champion swimmer and diver. Before graduating, he entered the U.S. Army during World War Two and served in Japan. He then attended the University of Florida where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and Scabbard & Blade Military fraternity, and then transferred to Florida State University. He later moved to New Orleans for 17 years where he was active in politics running for State Senate, and was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1968. Upon returning to Tampa in 1974, he was a member of Palma Ceia Golf & Country Club and Ye Mystic Krewe of Gasparilla. His professional career was in the paper business spending 30 years with Maryland Cup Corp., then Heritage Paper Co., and finally Peninsular Paper Co. He was preceded in death by parents Margaret and John Savery King of England, two brothers Rex Andrews King and John Ambrose (Bruce)King, and a daughter Carol Merrin King. He is survived by Joan Merrin King; children Kent Savery King, Jill King Clendaniel, and Wendy Ann King of Bear, Delaware; niece Nancy King Little and husband Thomas; nephew Bryant Andrews King and wife Regina; niece Kathy Lykins and nephew Jim King of Georgia; grandchildren Amy LeBlanc Ramirez, Jennifer Merrin Clendaniel and Joseph Andrews King; great grand daughter Anabel Scott Remirez; and Nancy Buck King. Jimmy was a dynamic man with many talents and interest, but mostly he had a special gift of entertaining everyone he touched. He will be greatly missed. The family will schedule a celebration at a later date.
